THE CORRELATION BETWEEN ENGLISH CONTENT SOCIAL MEDIA ENGAGEMENT AND EFL LEARNER’S PROFICIENCY IN SLANG AT STKIP PGRI TRENGGALEK
"With the advancement of technology, communicating and exchanging culture has become easier among EFL circles. Social media that is used every day also supports this. This makes EFL students familiar with slang terms that are often found on social media. This research investigates the relationship between engagement with English content on social media and contemporary slang vocabulary proficiency among EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students at STKIP PGRI Trenggalek. The main aim is to understand the extent to which social media interactions influence students' ability to understand and use English slang.
The study used a quantitative research approach, utilizing documentations to measure levels of social media engagement and proficiency tests to assess slang knowledge. The sample consisted of EFL learners who actively use social media platforms to consume English content. The documentation used is the average engagement with social media within a period of one week and the test used is a multiple choice regarding slang proficiency. The validity and reliability of the research instruments are guaranteed by using content validity and reliability which are calculated using Alpha Cronbach's formula using SPSS 25. Correlation in this study was calculated using the Pearson Correlation formula with the help of SPSS 25.
The results show a moderate positive correlation (r=0.424) between social media engagement and slang proficiency, indicating that increased interaction with English content on social media is correlated with higher slang proficiency. However, the level of significance of this correlation is low, indicating that although there is a positive trend, it is not statistically strong enough to draw definite conclusions. This suggests that social media engagement alone may not be enough to predict slang proficiency without considering other contributing factors.
Despite its limitations, these findings suggest that integrating social media-based activities into the EFL curriculum has the potential to improve learners' mastery of contemporary slang. This research contributes to the growing body of literature on the role of digital media in language education, providing practical insights for educators and educational institutions.
