UNDERSTANDING THE PERCEPTIONS OF FOURTH-SEMESTER ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDUCATION STUDENTS AT STKIP PGRI TRENGGALEK ON THE ROLE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (CHATGPT) IN ACADEMIC WRITING
"In modern education, artificial intelligence (AI) plays a crucial role in supporting learning. ChatGPT, an AI language model by OpenAI, assists academic writing by generating ideas, checking grammar, and paraphrasing sentences. However, concerns about its impact on writing skills and creativity have emerged. Understanding students' perceptions of AI in academic writing is vital to ensure its optimal use without compromising educational quality.
This research examines fourth semester English Language Education students at STKIP PGRI Trenggalek regarding the use of ChatGPT in academic writing. A qualitative method with a phenomenological approach was used to explore students' views and experiences. In depth interviews were conducted with 10 purposively selected students to gain comprehensive insights. The findings indicate that students see ChatGPT as a highly beneficial tool for improving the effectiveness and efficiency of academic writing. ChatGPT helps generate ideas, check and correct grammar, and paraphrase sentences quickly and accurately. Students appreciate the ease that ChatGPT provides in overcoming common writing obstacles such as writer's block and grammatical errors.
However, students are also aware of the challenges and concerns associated with using AI. They emphasize the importance of using AI only when necessary and not as a replacement for original writing efforts. Students agree that writing done through personal effort is more valuable and provides a greater sense of accomplishment compared to AI assisted writing. They also stress the importance of developing authentic writing skills through consistent practice and experience, and the necessity of guidance from instructors.
In conclusion, while AI tools like ChatGPT are beneficial for academic writing, their use must be balanced with individual writing efforts. Clear policies and guidelines are essential to maximize the benefits of AI without compromising educational integrity. This research offers valuable insights for educators and policymakers on integrating AI in education effectively.
