THE CORRELATION BETWEEN VOCABULARY MASTERY AND TRANSLATION ABILITY OF SIXTH SEMESTER STUDENTS IN THE TRANSLATION COURSE AT STKIP PGRI TRENGGALEK
"Vocabulary acquisition is a fundamental aspect of language learning that has a significant impact on various linguistic skills, including translation. In the context of translation, a rich and deep vocabulary enables the translator to understand and convey meaning and nuance accurately. It is important that the translation is not only grammatically correct but also appropriate to the context and culture of the target language. This is because each language has its own characteristics and nuances that must be considered so that the message conveyed does not lose its original meaning. This study aims to obtain data on the correlation between vocabulary mastery and translation skills of 6th semester students in the Translation course.
This research used a quantitative method with a correlational design. This research was conducted in the translation class in the English Education Study Program at STKIP PGRI Trenggalek. The sampling technique used in this study was the saturated or census sampling technique, with a total sample of 24 students from all populations. In collecting research data, the researcher used a multiple- choice vocabulary mastery test and a translation ability test in the form of a paragraph text in English that had to be translated into Indonesian. The test was designed to measure the extent to which vocabulary mastery has a relationship with students' ability to translate texts accurately.
Data analysis in this study was carried out using the Spearman Rank correlation test with a significance level (α) of 0.05. After the data was analyzed using SPSS 25 software, a sig (2-tailed) value of 0.001 was obtained, which is smaller than 0.05, and the correlation coefficient value was 0.636. These results show that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, which means that there is a strong positive relationship between vocabulary mastery and translation skills of 6th semester students in the Translation course.
Based on the analysis of the data obtained, it can be concluded that vocabulary acquisition is positively related and has a strong correlation with the translation skills of 6th semester students in the Translation course. This result emphasizes the importance of more in-depth vocabulary teaching in the translation course curriculum to improve students' translation skills. By paying more attention to vocabulary development, teachers can better prepare students for translation tasks that require precision and sensitivity to the context and culture of the target language. This will improve their overall competence in this important skill and help them become more effective and accurate translators.
