STRATEGIS FOR TEACHING EXTENSIVE READING ON NON-FICTION
"In this study, the author wants to identify and analyze effective strategies in teaching extensive reading on non-fiction texts. Extensive reading is a learning method that aims to improve reading skills through exposure to a large number and variety of texts. The main focus of this research is how these strategies can be effectively applied in an academic context, especially at the higher education level, Therefore, an appropriate teaching strategy is needed to guide students in extensive non-fiction reading activities. This study aims to find out first the learning design applied by lecturers,
teaching strategies used, the obstacles faced by lecturers in teaching, and finally the solutions applied by lecturers to overcome these obstacles.
Qualitative approach with descriptive method was used in this study. The data collection techniques used include interviews, observation, and documentation. The data sources of this research are lecturers who teach extensive reading courses. Data analysis techniques used include data reduction, data presentation, and verification.
The results showed that the lecturer designed an extensive reading strategy for non-fiction reading. The design began with a brainstorming session and continued with the application of speed reading strategies during reading activities. The process of implementing the strategy begins with asking questions related to the strategy to be used, followed by an explanation of the material, then the lecturer guides the students, and ends with the division of students into small groups, during this time however, careful preparation before starting learning is important. The solution that can be given is to provide appropriate strategies and materials in learning activities."
